The Pontine islands were formed as a result of volcanic eruptions and the lava rock base that emerged from the water has accumulated more lighter volcanic material.

Santo Stefano was sparsely inhabited in the Roman era and was a refuge for hermits.

Here the Bourbons have built a horseshoe-shaped prison and established a penal colony in operation until 1960. The presence of reefs around Santo Stefano has always made it difficult to land for the lack of a sheltered point.
