Baroque Festival Alessandro Stradella

Sep 1 - Sep 16

Viterbo, Nepi, Caprarola and Sutri 1-16 September: The Baroque Festival “Alessandro Stradella” is a point of reference for baroque music and in more than forty years of history has hosted artists of high international level and favoured the production and diffusion of previously unpublished works. In these years, the festival has been followed by a careful and loyal audience of music lovers, from those looking for something original to presentations by real masters.
The festival was founded in 2017 by the fusion of two successful festivals: the “Alessandro Stradella” International Festival of Nepi and the Baroque Festival in Viterbo. The union gave rise to a more articulate, specialized and dynamic manifestation. Thanks to this merger, the skills, professionalism and appeal to the public are increased.
A section is always dedicated in particular to the works of the brilliant composer Alessandro Stradella, the Caravaggio of music, a fascinating character born in Nepi in 1639 whose adventurous and romantic life ended abruptly in Genoa at the hands of a hitman in 1683.
The “Alessandro Stradella” Baroque Festival represents novelty and carries out research, training, production, dissemination and musical edition. It is a cultural project that looks to the future by combining the attention to the immense Italian heritage and the enhancement of new languages and new trends.
In this way, it encourages young people to approach and raise awareness of baroque and contemporary language through the practice of improvisation.
The Festival is the basis of The Stradella Project, an ambitious recording project of the Arcana label dedicated to the integral recording of his works, and of the Stradella Y (oung) – Project, a project of training and musical production aimed at the insertion of young artists into the professional performance world.
Among the novelties of the latest editions is a space for performances by young composers and youth ensembles of international success, the presence of contemporary compositions in every event of the festival and a concert entirely dedicated to the languages of today.
“The Stradella speakers are also interpreted here by young musical talents (Stradella Y-Project), an exemplary project in the shattered panorama of Italian cultural life”
The festival is held in impressive locations of Viterbo, Nepi, Caprarola, Sutri and other places of Tuscia and in some editions the inaugural concert has been held in Rome at the Parco della Musica in the prestigious Sala Petrassi.
The university city of Viterbo and the territory of Tuscia are ideal for baroque music as they are rich in musical history, having given birth to many great composers such as Alessandro Stradella, Virgilio and Domenico Mazzocchi, Marco Scacchi, Tullio Cima, Domenico Massenzio, Giovanni Boschetto Boschetti and many others.
Today the baroque festival “Alessandro Stradella” is probably the biggest baroque music festival in Italy: in addition to more than 15 concerts, there are also seminars, master classes, conferences and recordings dedicated to 17th century Roman music.
The artistic direction is by Andrea De Carlo. An event not to be missed.
