Maza Festival

Oct 6 - Oct 7

October 6th and 7th: A party with an ancient flavor that recalls the offerings that took place in the temple of the goddess Juno Sopita, one of the most important even before the arrival of the Romans. It was a very rich temple and its ruins are still visible in front of the archaeological museum.

The Maza Festival incorporates the ancient legend of the sacred serpent to the Goddess who lived in a cave in the temple. In spring the ritual of the virgin girls took place who were going to bring some cakes as a gift to the snake. If he liked them then the season would have been propitious, if instead he refused them then proceeded to sacrifice the young people who had not been able to convince the snake.

La Maza was precisely the name used to indicate focaccia that could be made with different ingredients according to the seasons and the occasion: water, oil, honey, milk, spelled flour, barley, chickpeas or broad beans.

Maza could be eaten alone or used as our bread to accompany other dishes.

With honey it also became a dessert.
