Castle Cantelmos

The first part of the castle dates back to about 1000 with a fortresss built on Mount Albeto that oversaw all the Val di Comino. It soon passed to the control of the Counts of Aquino who transformed it into a military citadel.

In 1349 an earthquake caused the collapse of the fortress and all the D’Aquino family perished at which time the Cantelmo took over the building of a new fortress making living in Alvito a true splendour. The castle has undergone further earthquakes yet today the thick walls and the imposing towers along the perimeter remain standing.
