The Fonte

The tripartite form of this font from the seventeenth century, with an elegant main structure and two side tanks, emphasizes its dual function. It is a piece of street furniture and source of water supply with tubes for drinking and, in the past, even drinking troughs for animals. The iron bars beneath the tubes served to support the copper ‘bowls’ that the women used to carry water to their homes. The drinking water source is the spring called the “Vigne” and on these waters all the countryside depended.
