Guide of Affile

Affile is located in the mountains overlooking the Aniene Valley and its ancient past is demonstrated by a section of polygonal walls.

During the Roman period it was divided into ‘centurie’ (probably plots of land of 100 Herediae) entrusted to individuals. The arrangement of the centre is made interesting by a Roman cistern that collects water from a spring.

Like many towns in the area, built around a thousand AD, it is constructed around a palace which led the social life of the area. It has been the fief of various families and then of the monastery of St. Scholastica in Subiaco. It seems that, before arriving in Subiaco, St. Benedict has passed through Affile and here he did his first miracle.
