Guide of Calcata

Calcata is a small village built on an island of volcanic tuff floating on a sea of clay in the Treja valley. The town has only one entrance, and over the years has changed the type of inhabitants. In the 1930s the countryside had been declared unusable and abandoned by its residents.

Only in the nineties a decree has saved the countryside from forced demolition.

Today it is teeming with art and craft workshops with artists from all over the world: Belgian, Dutch, American. Then there are still the hippies who live in the caves dug into the tuff rock on which the village stands. Calcata is also home for digital experts and is the seat of a telematic art centre.
