Guide of Colonna

The proximity of the Colonna with Rome characterized the entire first phase of this small town just 25 km from the capital along the important Via Casilina arriving in Naples. The details of its history are still uncertain, but certainly this was a Roman centre and a post station. In the fourth century it became a bishop’s seat was later destroyed by the barbarian invasions.

Colonna gave the name to the important family (originally Counts of Tusculum), which had its headquarters here. The centre was destroyed by Pope Boniface VIII in his struggle with the rebellious Colonna family. Over the centuries it has followed several noble families until the establishment of the town in 1849.
