The name probably derives from Minto Me-natur (prey of fire) or the Minotaur, the figure of Greek mythology. It is divided into two distinct areas: one, a hilly area and two, along the coast, with the protected area of Scauri and the mouth of the Garigliano river.
The Romans were interested in the marine area, it is witnessed by the Roman villas, while around the sixth century. A.D. the local population left the city-port and moved to the secure of a hill.
The upper part was a “sentinel” of the Gulf of Gaeta with a panorama that included the Garigliano valley and across to the Pontine Islands. The old town centre was founded around the castle and the Municipal Palace.
