Guide of Montefiascone

Montefiascone experienced good fortune in the Roman period, thanks to the Via Cassia, and in the Middle Ages the fortress had strategic importance.

Until 1400 it saw kings and emperors, and its castle was the seat of many popes. Innocent III reinforced the castle and stayed there in 1207. Pope Martin IV stayed there and embellished it turning it into a palace because he was fond of eels from Lake Bolsena (Dante put him in Purgatory among the greedy).

Here was also minted a coin, the “skull cap” or “paparina” and from here Albornoz has initiated restoration of the Papal States.

Gioacchino Rossini has set his charming opera Cinderella here.
