Guide of Pontinia

Pontinia is a ‘planned city’, i.e. one of the five cities founded during the fascist period after the reclamation of the Pontine plain, from which it derives its name.

Over the centuries many attempts had been made to ‘tame’ the swamp first by the Romans with that by Theodoric in 507-511. Only between 1777 and 1798 was Pope Pius VI able to partially reduce the swamp by building a canal that still runs parallel to the Via Appia and flows to Terracina.

The settlement, which opened December 18, 1935 with a simple and austere style, inspired by the rural environment that was free of superfluous decoration. The main buildings overlook the square: the Post Office building, the hotel, the OND and the Town Hall.
