It is a deep cavity at the foot of the mountain of Morge, also called the “Hole” or “Mouth of the well.” It is unknown if its cause is natural or made by man’s work. Pliny believed it was connected to Acqua Marcia. Sextus Julius Frontinus, governor of Britannia water and curator, says that this ancient water flows from different sources.

In the ancient records of Scarpa Terra (old name of Cineto Romano), in the sixteenth century, it is said that it was used as a “prison for capital crimes.”
