The church was built in 1599 by the Anguillara where a sarcophagus was found, then placed under the main altar.
The church has a special shape with a central plan, inspired by the shapes of the first early Christian and Byzantine churches. Its style heralds some forms of Baroque architecture. The central plan was typical of the early pagan shrines and later Christianity has used it baptisteries.
Inside there are frescoes and decorations and in the apse you can see the image of an iconic Black Madonna.
