In the valley lies the Fregellae colony built in 328 BC to counter the advance of the Samnite troops, and then destroyed by Samnites in 320 BC. Rebuilt in 313 BC, the colony became a real cultural military economic and political power, so important as to be again destroyed in 125 BC by Lucio Opimius Consul during the bloody suppression of the Italics. The ancient city is able to be partly visited thanks to the organisation and restoration work.
