The site of ancient Lavinium was well known and since excavations began in 1955 a number of bronze age sites have been found such as the Sanctuary of 13 Altars and the Heroon (Shrine) of Aeneas, a burial mound from the seventh century BC, that could be the tomb of Aeneas. The walls and gate of the city, baths and a temple dedicated to Minerva also have been found. (see also Archeological Museum).
