The church is one of the oldest, probably dating from the tenth century, and was built by a Greek community. It was originally formed from a single space, then expanded in the thirteenth century when a right side aisle was added. The church has an important artistic heritage represented by the frescoes of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance that are layered and overlapping, (and which were brought to light in 1875). Those in the nave are the oldest, dating back to the eleventh century. The frescoes depict saints and other religious scenes, in narrative form, like the History of the Martyrdom of St. Margaret and the Seven Works of Mercy.
