The Sanctuary is located in the Canneto Valley at an altitude of 1020 metres at the foot of Mount Meta and is documented the first time in 819 AD. Legend has it that here the Virgin Mary appeared to shepherds who asked them to build the sanctuary.

The archaeological excavations show that this was a place of pagan worship devoted to Mefiti Goddess and in AD 400 was adapted by Christians. One arrives by trail from Settefrati or Picinisco and throughout the summer it is a pilgrimage site.
