The Sforza-Cesarini Palace, is located on the Rock of Ardea just above the Torre d’Ardia, and was built by the Colonna in 1421. In 1564 it was sold to the Cesarini and hosted the Borgia Pope Gelasius II who took refuge within its walls to escape the Germans. The castle was surrounded by a moat, accessed via a stone bridge. According to legend, the palace houses the ghost of Ludovico Colonna, who was killed in 1436 with a stab to the throat by his brother in law.
