Jenne is located on the Simbruini mountains, in an area crossed by the Aniene river not far from the monastery of Subiaco.

There are several hypotheses about the origin of the name, it may come from “Gehenna” (the gates to hell), the name given to the karst cave at the foot of Mount Pratiglio (the Grotto of Inferniglio).

Its traditions are deeply rustic and the land has been cultivated up to very high altitudes while the shepherds were exploiting the good exposure of the Monte Pratiglio slopes.

Given its proximity to Subiaco, the Jenne area was almost always under the direct control of the monastery or of the Papal States.
