Its proximity to Rome made Mentana a place inhabited since the sixth century BC, and here Seneca and Martial, the famous Latin writers, and Agrippina had their villas.

After a period of neglect, Mentana was home to an important moment in human history: the meeting between the king of the Franks Charlemagne and Pope Leo III on November 23 of 799, a month before the coronation as Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. At that meeting the agreement between pope and emperor was made.

Mentana was the scene of another important historical moment: the battle between the troops of Garibaldi and those of the Papal States that led to the unification of Italy
