The history of this town is not well known though it should go back to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, with the unification of scattered settlements. It became part of the territories of the town of Rieti in 1375 and was involved in the struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines. It has always followed the historical events of the nearby Rieti.

The name is derived from ‘Rivus’ (stream) and a confounding term.
