Santa Marinella was born on the ruins of the port city of Pyrgi a city of Punic, Phoenician, Etruscan and Roman heritage. In medieval times the coast was full of defensive towers and is called Santa Marinella, from the small town, under the control of the Orsini family and the papal state, that worshiped Santa Marina.

In 1887 it passed to the Odescalchi family that realized an urban plan. Here Guglielmo Marconi established the Centro Radioelettrico Sperimentale of CNR where he experimented with radiotelephone, blind navigation and radio-location, and built the first prototype of Radar.
