Affile. Pertuso caves

With the nearby municipality of Roiate, Affile shares a real geological peculiarity: the Pertuso caves which were excavated by the Carpine stream. The caves are about 200 meters long and in the summer the route is partly dry, while in the winter the flow can be very violent, and you need a boat to discover the lake.

The caves were discovered for the first time in 1849 by F. Gori and inside you can see the remains of two small dams that were probably built to feed a mill.

Cornino is a small plateau at the foot of Mount Nuria higher up than that of Rascino.

Here there is a perennial pond, the only source of water for many animals (horses and cows) that seek new pastures at high altitude.

This little plain of Fiamignano is a natural oasis of rare wild beauty.

The lake of Turano has been made to obtain electric energy and to regulate the waters of the river Turano and prevent it affecting the Rieti plain.

The work began in 1936 with the construction of a 'gravity' dam finished in 1938.

The filling of the dam caused the submergence of houses in the valley and the village of Piccolo Colle.

The Turano Lake is also connected with the Lake Salto through a tunnel.

The area of the lake is fully equipped to cater for leisure and the keen naturalist.

You can go horseback riding, hiking, fishing, paragliding, cycling, canoeing, swimming, water skiing, trail bike, enduro, and hunting dog training.

Facing the sanctuary of Our Lady of the Star (Ferentino) in Trivigliano, on one side of Mount Corniano, lies the "Cave of Corniano".

The cave is excavated in the miocene limestone and always contains a certain amount of water to which, during the summer, the local people of the surroundings are drawn and only rarely is it completely emptied.

Inside you can admire stalactites and stalagmites.
