Alvito. Cantelmo Castle

Alvito. Cantelmo Castle

The first part of the Cantelmo castle of Alvito dates back to about 1000.

It started as a fortresss built on Mount Albeto that oversaw all the Val di Comino.

It soon passed to the control of the Counts of Aquino who transformed it into a military citadel.

In 1349 an earthquake caused the collapse of the fortress and all the D'Aquino family perished.

At which time the Cantelmo took over the building of a new fortress making living in Alvito a true splendour.

The castle Cantelmos has undergone further earthquakes yet today the thick walls and the imposing towers along the perimeter remain standing.
