Romana gate - Porta Romana is the first door you meet in Viterbo coming from Rome and is located along the original route of the Cassia road.
The gate dates back to 1653 and was built in place of the nearby gate of San Sisto, named after the nearby church whose bell tower was obtained from one of the towers of the walls.
The construction of the door was entrusted to the design of Francesco Maiolino and was supposed to be a tribute to the visit of Pope Innocent X to Viterbo, as reported by the plaque above the arch of the door. The decorations of the door end with the statue of Santa Rosa, protector of the city, two pinnacles and the papal coats of arms.
The splinters on the baroque decorations of the door are a testimony of the bombings of 1798 by French troops.
