Ventotene. Roman Port

The ancient Roman port of Ventotene is a masterpiece of engineering: a basin carved into the tuff rock at the point where the island slopes gently into the sea. It is stile the sofest port of the island.

They are still visible a series of arches in tufa used as repositories and a larger cavity that kept the chains to close the port when the sea was rough.

On the quayside of the port we find 3 large Roman bollards, sturdy and low columns that served to moor the boats.
