San Vittore del Lazio. Archaeological area of Aquilonia

On the slopes of Monte Sambucaro in San Vittore del Lazio lies the polygonal Samnitic city walls. It is a fortification built to defend an important settlement.

From reading the Book X of the historian Livy on the third Samnite war, it is clear that here must have been the mythical City of Aquilonia, destroyed by the Romans in 293 BC.

The battle was so fierce that the Roman senate pronounced the terrible sentence: "Aquilonia delenda east" (Aquilonia must be destroyed), as it would for Carthage two centuries later.
