Brancaccio Castle

Roviano. Brancaccio Castle

The Brancaccio castle dominates the village of Roviano and was built on the highest point from which the entire Aniene Valley is dominated. Due to its proximity to Subiaco and its position, it was probably part of the defensive system of the monasteries of Subiaco and had been built by the Marsi counts on their orders.

The city was born around this castle which for many centuries was governed by the Colonna family, apart from some brief periods with the Orsini and Farnese families.

We owe the Colonna family the construction of the wall system, of the Scaramuccia gate and the arrangement of the town.

The castle today is characterized by its crenellated tower and the mighty bastion and the ancient medieval pentagonal courtyard is still recognizable.

At the end of the 15th century, the Colonna family enlarged the castle, transforming it into an elegant palace with large halls intended for public life.

Its name comes from the Brancaccio family who owned it for a few years during the twentieth century. Today the castle is municipal property and houses the Aniene Valley Museum of Rural Life.
