The route of the Battle of Cassino is located inside the Natural Monument of Montecassino, a protected area of about 700 hectares where ancient tracks and paths reveal memorable places of the Second World War. Here the most painful pages of local history were written, both for the grief caused and for the loss of the artistic and cultural heritage.
Altitude 593: on the top of Mount Calvary, which dominates the entire Liri Valley, there is an obelisk erected on the battlefield in honor of the soldiers of the 3rd Carpathian Fusiliers Division.
Sherman tank: placed in memory of the fallen of the 4th Armored Regiment “Skorpion”. It is surmounted by a cross built with tracks. The tank blew up after hitting a German mine and was left in place in memory of the Polish dead.
House of the Doctor (Domek Doktora): this rural house was a place of shelter and rescue for Polish soldiers in May 1944 and is still inhabited by a family.
Masseria Albaneta: it is an ancient fortified monastery, now in ruins, where Saint Thomas Aquinas and Saint Ignatius of Loyola had also lived and was the most important farm of the abbey. It was used by the Germans during the war as a command post and field infirmary.
Altitude 575: on the top of Colle S. Angelo a large iron cross was erected in honor of the soldiers of the 5th Kresowa Infantry Division.
Cavendish Road: is the ancient road that led from the village of Caira to Masseria Albaneta and Montecassino. Commissioned by General Freyberg, commander of the New Zealand corps, it was a military road about 3 km long and was used during the third battle of Cassino and by Polish tanks in May 1944.
