Ascoli Piceno. Food and Wine

There is a product that best represents the city of Ascoli Piceno and it is the Oliva Ascolana Tenera DOP. From this variety of olive, Ascoli Piceno produces an exceptional Extra Virgin Olive Oil with important medical qualities, which is also the base of one of the most characteristic Italian dishes: the Ascolana Olives.

The olives are pitted, filled with meat, fish or vegetables, breaded and then fried in oil. They are perfect as an appetizer or to accompany an aperitif. They were among the favorite dishes of the great Italian opera composers Gioacchino Rossini and Giacomo Puccini.

If you go to Piazza del Popolo you can enjoy them in one of the restaurants and bars on the square accompanied by a good cold glass of white wine from the Marche region, like the Verdicchio. You can also accompany this dish with the Fritto Ascolano, which includes artichokes, courgettes and lamb cutlets.

You will feel as if you’re in heaven, and one of the luckiest people on earth. If, on the other hand, you go to Ascoli Piceno during the month of August, you can participate in the Ascoli Olive Festival.

Among the wines of the Ascoli Piceno area, a place of honor is reserved for the Rosso Piceno DOC made with Montepulciano and Sangiovese grapes. A wine with aromas of flowers and red fruit, which leaves an intense and persistent flavor in the mouth. Perfect to accompany first courses and even spicy meats, also a delight with cheeses.

At the end of the meal, however, you can taste the famous Anisetta Meletti, the typical liqueur of Ascoli Piceno. Caffè Meletti in Piazza del Popolo inaugurated in 1907 is one of the 150 historic Italian cafes.
