A Digital Nomad's Journey: The Unexpected Encounter in Cambodia

Let's discover Asia with Alessia's journey

2024 has ended, and I'm already immersed (even too much) in 2025. Our journey took us to Cambodia, a stop that turned out to be a very pleasant surprise.

Initial expectations were low, a bit like those I had for Laos (you can read the last article here), but in the end I was almost sorry to leave this splendid country and not be able to spend more days there.

But going back to the reason why I already can't stand 2025, this new year started in the worst possible way... at least from a work point of view: my Facebook and Instagram profile were hacked. Here's the unexpected encounter I was telling you about. As soon as I found out, it was a cold shower.

Fortunately, everything was resolved quite quickly (or almost). The hacker, unfortunately, managed to use my clients' money through my account, but we fixed everything very quickly. Of course, I still don’t have access to my social media profiles at the moment, but I have to say that a little digital detox never hurts.

This experience has taught me to be more cautious: to be careful about the sites I browse, what I click on, and how I protect my data online. Ironically, just a few months ago I was the one, on behalf of Meta, reassuring customers who were in the same situation as me. Now, however, I have experienced everything first-hand! As always, it’s all a circle… which I hope has closed (at least for this year).

Aside from this stressful moment – which I can now also talk about with a smile – Cambodia was a discovery, as I was telling you. The connection in Siem Reap was excellent, and there we visited the wonderful archaeological site of Angkor Wat.

Continuing towards the paradise island of Koh Rong, the connection got a little worse, but with such a spectacular view of the ocean everything fades into the background. White beaches, crystal clear water with shades of green and blue: I feasted my eyes and my heart. During video calls with clients, many confessed to feeling a pinch of envy for my background!

Here I also tried new experiences - or, at least, never in such an incredible context. I went snorkeling and a night swim with bioluminescence: an indescribable emotion as soon as I immersed my head under water.

Moving towards Vietnam, we stopped in Phnom Penh, the capital, where the trip touched one of the most moving moments: the visit to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. It was a touching experience, but the sadness soon dissolved thanks to a carefree memory of the days in Siem Reap.

On January 1st, Giuseppe and I were on a boat on the gigantic Tonle Sap Lake for an excursion when suddenly, a group of Cambodians approached with a guitar and a bongo. They started playing, invited us to sing and dance with them, and even offered us some beers!

It was perhaps one of the best moments of the trip: being in contact with the locals, experiencing their energy and spontaneity... all this made the experience even more special, even more so knowing their sad past.

As the guide also told us, Cambodians are happy people!

Let's remember that it's the beginning of the year and for me it means good intentions, so I would like to share some of them with you. I want to be braver, face challenges with responsibility and never stop updating myself, learning and growing, especially at work.

And of course, continue to enjoy this life as a digital nomad.

Not everyone finds the courage to leave everything and go to the other side of the world for a more or less long or indefinite period. I feel grateful every day for this choice and for all the opportunities it is offering me.

I can say that I have closed 2024 by already starting to live the resolutions of 2025. And if the morning is a good indicator of the day, this will certainly be a year full of adventures, incredible places and new interesting strategies to create!
