The walls of San Donato Val di Comino probably belong to Cominum, an important Samnite city destroyed by the Romans in 293 AD.
From a report of a portrait of a female was traced to the fact that in this area there was pagan worship of the goddess Mefite, connected with the underworld, with its sulphur fumes, (which are present in the area) and with water sources.
Another piece that evidences this presence is an inscription on a small column, now placed in the Sanctuary of Canneto, where explicit reference is made to the goddess: "Numerio Satrio Stabilione, liberto di Numerio, e Publio Pomponio Salvio, liberto di Publio, fecero dono a Mefite".
