The archaeological area of Volsinii includes a vast area on which stood the ancient Roman city of Volsinii (now Bolsena), probably founded previously by the Etruscans.
The forum and an ancient pagan temple have been identified, the temple later being transformed into a Catholic church, sections of the protective wall, a Roman road and at least two homes.
In the House of the Paintings frescoes have been found that range from the Ist century BC and the IV century AD as well as an underground area for orgiastic rites.
This Roman city was abandoned with the arrival of the barbarians and the population took refuge in the fortress from which the present city of Bolsena was born.
