In Casalvieri there are dozens of fountains and springs and around many of them have been born stories and legends like that of the fountain of 'Mani Erte'.
The fountain was located near the house of the ‘7 Brothers’, seven brigands who scared a generation of inhabitants of Casalvieri at the end of the nineteenth century.
The “outstretched hands” (mani erte) means that anyone approaching their home had to raise their hands to show that they were not armed.
The particular story tells how three of these brothers managed to escape capture by the gendarmes who had surrounded them while eating in a tavern.
The story is that the brigands turned into werewolves, escaped on all fours and managed to sow panic and fear among the gendarmes and the inhabitants of the country.
