Montefiascone. Episcopal Palace

The Episcopal Palace is located in one of the most important parts of Montefiascone, in Piazza Santa Margherita opposite the cathedral.

The building dates from the XV century at the behest of Pope Pius II Piccolomini.

The palace has a simple and elegant façade characterized by three levels of regular openings and an elegant entrance door which can be reached via a staircase.

Many rooms inside are finely frescoed and wood ceilings are carved and painted.

In 1734 the palace was enriched by an elegant Italian garden with geometrically ordered ramps and hedges.

The garden was commissioned by Cardinal Pompeo Aldovrandi who had it made by leveling a hill and the whole story of the work is told in a plaque near the large entrance gate.

The garden was filled with many statues that were destroyed by the French army in 1798.
