Olevano Romano

Coat of arms of Olevano Romano
The Olevano Romano centre is predates the Roman era as shown by the remains of the walls of polygonal architecture (made of large blocks of local stone on which the visible surfaces are coated with masonry with straight line joints), a characteristic of many cities of southern Lazio.

In the Middle Ages it became a "castrum" and Oddone Colonna, new lord of Olevano, built a castle on the spur of limestone. After the Colonna era the estate passed to the City of Rome, which in 1364 enacted the statutes of the city.

The last of Olevano princes was Prince Camillo Borghese (1775-1832), husband of Pauline Bonaparte, Napoleon's sister.
