Donut of Serrone

Serrone. Donut of Serrone

The Serrone Donut (Ciambella di Serrone o Ciambella Serronese) is considered a symbol of wealth and a hope of prosperity.

According to local traditions, women received the donut as a gift from the man who was going to ask their hand. When he arrived on the day of the wedding, the woman rested the donut on her husband's head as a seal of their union.

According to other traditions this donut was made with a taste neither sweet nor salty. It was also the workers' food as it was worn by women as a bracelet and was eaten while working in the fields.

The donut is made with flour, eggs, yeast, oil, anise, salt and lemon zest and its flavour is likely to be accompanied by both chocolate and jams as well as meats and cheeses.
